Intel's latest RealSense depth camera doubles the range of previous models

Intel is no stranger to depth cameras, having created a whole line of them under the RealSense umbrella. Today, the company took the wraps off of its latest, the RealSense D455, which doubles the range compared to prior cameras in Intel's lineup.

Intel envisions the D455 equally a camera fit for a range of indoor and outdoor applications. Thanks to its increased "optimal range" of six meters, Intel says the D455 is twice as accurate as D400 cameras without cutting down on the field of view.

"The D455 also includes global shutters for the depth and RGB sensors to improve correspondence betwixt the 2 different data streams and to match the field of view between the depth sensors and the RGB sensor," Intel said in a press release. "In addition, this camera also integrates an IMU to let for refinement of its depth awareness in any state of affairs where the photographic camera moves."

This combination of capabilities should let the camera to exist used by robots to let them to amend on the choices they brand, like how to avoid obstacles. In hospitals, Intel says, the camera tin can be used to more closely monitor patients with alerts based on motility.
